new poem

Momma was right
They will look you in the eyes
Smile and say something like
“Wow, I’m so glad to meet you”
or “Finally, I get to meet you in person”
but they are not your friends
in fact, they are your enemies
your competition
Remember that old saying that your momma told you?
Keep your friends close
But keep your enemies closer
As I get older, I find this to be more and more true
And as my standards adjust to my maturity
I also find I have way more enemies.
Hang out with these people if you want
Go to their parties
Go to their readings
Pretend to be interested in their drunk banter
And if you’re real lucky
They will publish you
And not fuck you.

A bit cynical, are we? I understand the message, but this one doesn’t really ring out as poetry like all your really great ones. I’m going to read the next one now…

I got a letter out of nowhere from FN Wright the other day telling me I am a FNG and have no right to criticize people. Among other things, he said I reminded him of you. Not sure why exactly, although it was not meant as a compliment. Then I read his poem about you admiring his art and then not fucking him…strange…just thought I’d pass it along…

Here’s the quote from FN Wright:
“u remind me of a female poet by the name of debbie kirk. the 2 of u shd hook up. a real pair 2 draw 2 if there ever was one.”

Damn, Debbie, is that ever TRUE–
I had my doubts, but no, now at 58,
I know that “saying” has merit!
bIgTiMe!
BTW, great poem…
